Peter stared at the phone as the line went dead. “Damn!” He looked over at Jacob. “Is Talia always that insubordinate?”

Jacob grinned. “She can be strong willed, but she and David are the best we have. You know why she cut the call off, right?”

Peter sagged back in his chair. “So they can keep a free hand. I get it. But Kate’s not ready for that.”

“I disagree. She lacks experience, yes, but Talia and David will guide her through the nuances. As for the mission itself, I couldn’t argue with anything she said. Kate’s got an intuitive feel for this. How is it she didn’t end up in the field before now?”

“She’s a top analyst. When someone’s that good at their job, you tend to leave them where they are.”

“She belongs in operations.”

“I don’t disagree, but that’s a discussion for another day. Right now, she’s been thrown into the fire unprepared and I’m depending on Mossad to get her through it.”

Jacob smiled. “I’ve been doing this a long time, my friend. I spent many years in the field, as did you. I remember what it’s like in that fire. You catch the spy. I’ll watch over them.”

A knock on the door interrupted the discussion. They both looked up as Nick Mueller stepped into the room. “Can I speak with you for a minute, boss?”

Jacob rose from his chair. “I need to make some calls.”

Nick waited until he left and closed the door. “You’ve heard from Kate?” he asked as Peter waved him to a chair.

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t bring me in for the call? If you don’t trust me …”

Peter waved him to silence. “It isn’t that. Kate’s been under the gun in Europe, and I mean that literally. She’s not prepared for that kind of thing and the stress is getting to her. She wanted nobody but me and Jacob on that call, so I indulged her. Don’t take it personally.”

“Is there anything I should know?”

Peter decided now was the moment to set the trap. “They made it out of Russia, but she’s had enough. She’ll be flying home tomorrow. That’s a good thing because I think Artisimov’s been holding back and I’m hoping she can get him to open up again.”

“Maybe I should sit in when she talks to him.”

“I’ll take that under advisement. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got an appointment upstairs.”

Peter watched him go. The bait was set. Now all he could do was sit back and wait.
